Blind Luck eased in Lady's Secret

10/01/2011 - Arcadia, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Champion filly Blind Luck had to be eased down the stretch in Saturday's $250,000 Lady's Secret Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The four-year-old was the 13-10 favorite in the seven-horse field.

Typically a late runner, Blind Luck again settled into last-place during the early going. However, she never offered her normal late run down the stretch.

With Garrett Gomez in the saddle, Blind Luck was eased the final furlong in the 1 1/16-mile Lady's Secret.

"I couldn't keep up. That's pretty much it," Gomez said following the race.

Blind Luck's trainer and co-owner Jerry Hollendorfer also offered no explanation.

"I don't know, bad training job," Hollendorfer commented.

The win went to 9-5 second choice Zazu, ridden by Joel Rosario.

"Ability-wise, she can run with anyone, anytime, anywhere," Rosario said. "She has an amazing turn of foot, one that I've never seen before."

Zazu is trained by John Sadler for owners Jerry and Ann Moss.

"I was a little bit surprised she was that far back," Sadler noted about his late running filly. "I saw a fast pace up front. She trained really well for this race. She's been a little unlucky in a couple of races, but to me this is your top three-year-old filly in the country. We have a win over Turbulent Descent. We're two to one over Plum Pretty and a signature win today. I mean obviously Blind Luck didn't run her best. I'm making the case for Zazu. I hope the other filly comes out okay. Zazu, she brings it every time. She's never run a bad race this year. I'm thrilled for the Mosses."

The Lady's Secret is part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" program which gives the stakes winner an automatic spot in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Churchill Downs on November 4.

Zazu earned $150,000 Saturday to boost her career bankroll to $682,985 with four wins in 11 starts. This year she won the Las Virgenes and Hollywood Oaks. The filly was second in the Santa Ynez, Santa Anita Oaks and Clement L. Hirsch in her last start. Zazu finished third to Plum Pretty in the Kentucky Oaks.

Zazu returned $5.80, $3.80 and $4.40. Ultra Blend paid $6.80 and $6.60, and Great Hot paid $9.60 to show.

Santa Anita Handicap winner Game On Dude posted his first win in Saturday's $250,000 Goodwood Stakes since capturing the Big 'Cap. The four-year-old gelding was ridden by Chantal Sutherland for trainer Bob Baffert in the eight-horse race.

Game On Dude raced second behind pacesetter Tres Borrachos in the 1 1/8-mile race. The 11-10 favorite took the lead entering the far turn and was able to hold off the late-running Awesome Gem to post a half-length victory.

"That is his running style (to be on the lead), and when you get away from that, he doesn't run well," Baffert said. "He likes to get it out there and go. I told Chantal to have the lead at all costs, and I thought down the backside I shouldn't have said at all costs. She rides the horse with a lot of confidence. You just have to let him run because that's the way he wants to run. I have lot of confidence in Chantal."

Haskell winner Coil, also trained by Baffert, finished third followed by Miss March, Tres Borrachos, Preamble and Golden Itiz. Nijinsky's Song needed to be vanned off the track.

The Goodwood Stakes victory gives Game On Dude an automatic position in the Breeders' Cup Classic for owners Joe Torre, Lanni Family Trust and Ernest Moody.

Game On Dude also adds $150,000 to his earnings. The gelding has won five of 13 lifetime starts for better than $1.2 million.

Game On Dude returned $4.20, $2.60 and $2.20. Awesome Gem paid $4.00 and $2.60, and Coil paid $2.40 to show.
